Kesäkuun SNY-paketti

No, niin, se oli siinä. SNY kevät 2016 kesäkuun paketti saapui. Salattavaa ei enää ole. Kevättäni on ilahduttanut LeenaS.

The Good Day Sunshine shawl on Knitty's first page was just a little bit too tempting, had to knit! And since it's quite small and does not need much yarn, I found a nice blue left-over ball of Wetterhoff's Silvia in my stash.

Knitting with baby and toddler in the house had some effect, as usual, and I forgot to make the repeat of rows 13-16 (or something like that) on the Ray chart, but did not feel like tinking four rows when I found out. Would have had enough yarn - now I'm left with 15 grams (had approx. 45 when I started) which feels a bit unnecessary, but that's the only problem.

Since my toddler girl has a lace shawl addict mom, I thought it was about time she got a lace shawl of her own, this one's for her (Still haven't figured out how to keep pictures upright when posting here :-( )!

Finally finished Little Red Riding Hood after three months of cables! Sorry about the picture - Blogger just wont keep it upright :-(. Also finished a quick shawl from the same magazine.

Two Shawls Finished!

It's been a while, but finally I have something to show again!

Last, but not least, therefore first (...eeh - logic?), I dug up my Mystic Desire Shawl. Or actually, I lifted it down from the top shelf basket, and finally blocked it!!! It's been finished for a year or so, I just never got on to blocking and weaving in loose ends - blocking is difficult with a 1-year-old in the house so basically I understand why I placed it on the shelf back then, but postponing things is dangerous!

I'm not 100% satisfied with my blocking this time, but as my assistant helping me with the needles is not yet 2 years old, this is good enough! And I am very pleased with the shawl, as usual when it comes to Anna Dalvi's designs :-). The size is just what I wanted - height approx. 1 meter, and almost two meters wide, and as I used Grignasco Merino Silk on 3,75 mm needles, it's as thin as nothing else, and weighs 62 grams. On to the pictures:

Also, a couple of days ago, we blocked my Panache shawl. The yarn is a mystery yarn that I found in my freezer... I think it's Evilla, it's Estonian wool in any case. Knitted on 5 mm needles, and while knitting I was sure I'd end up with lots and lots of leftover yarn. In the end, the last rows, as usual, needed lots and lots of yarn, and I ran short. I think I knitted, tinked and re-knitted the last few rows three or four times and in the end had less than 1 meter yarn left after weaving in the ends... I had to leave out the last four knitted rows, that, and making only 8 chain stitches instead of 9 on the last crocheted row, was the solution to the problem.

While knitting I was also very disappointed with the yarn colors - too much boring gray for me. But as usual, blocking makes miracles happen, and I'm very happy with the result. Even the dull gray turned out to be a really pretty green color in daylight after blocking.

Shawl size a nice 90 centimeter diameter, weight 200 grams. Ready to fly:

Triangular Summer Shawl

I was going to knit the Anniversary Mystery Shawl 2011 by Goddessknits, but could not find any appropriate yarn in my stash, which feels kind of improbable since I have loads and loads of yarn... But I still wanted to knit a shawl, so I looked through my shawl books and decided on Triangular Summer Shawl from Nancy Bush's book Knitted Lace of Estonia.

This is the second triangular shawl I make from that book, and for some reason they're both a bit on the smallish side for me - I find that I tend to prefer big shawls. But it's pretty and was a nice knit.

The yarn is Estonian too, an angora goat wool blend that I ran into by accident on our local market last year. Thin, soft, nice to knit. The only problem I had was when I was sewing the lace border onto the finished shawl - the yarn is a bit furry and was difficult to sew with. Also it would run very thin at the end, and I ended up transporting a lot more yarn through the seam than I first counted on, since it would break every now and then. For shawls with sewn-on border I guess a stronger and less fuzzy yarn would be more appropriate...

Water Melon Shawl

I took part in a swap in the Scandinavian RAK-group on Ravelry some months ago, and got a wonderful package from Knittermarie. The Lace yarn in the package immediately insisted on becoming a Melon Shawl (from the book Victorian Lace Today). I've wanted to knit this shawl a long time, apparently I've just waited for the right yarn, which turned out to be from Saffron Dyeworks. The colorway is Citrice, I think, and, well, to me this is the Water Melon Shawl. The color in the pictures is a bit more pink, it actually has a lot more water melon in it... Knitting needle 4mm (also in the package from Knittermarie).

It blocked out wider than I thought (45 cm), but not too long (approx 120 cm). But the 80th birthday hero that I think will be the recipient of this shawl is quite petite, so I think it'll be ok.

I was hoping that I'd get to take pictures on snow today, but yesterday's snowfall turned into rain, so there's no snow left :-(.

Mandala II

At last I found time to block my Mandala II -shawl. This is the (free Mystery) Goddessknit Anniversary shawl pattern 2010; I did the first one in 2008, but did not have the opportunity to participate in 2009.

This is mostly a D-shawl, i.e. I used patterns D-D-A-D.

Size after blocking approx. 133 cm diameter, mainly because the carpet I block on is that wide. This yarn/shawl might still enjoy a bit more blocking I think, so I might block it wider some day, by folding double (no, I'm not going to buy a new carpet for this!).

I bought the yarn some years ago on the lovely Estonian island Saaremaa, the brand is Maetalu lõng if I remember correctly. A thin, very natural wool (with a lot of sheep-feeling to it, which is what I really like about Estonian yarns, closer to the sheep than to the factory that is).
And the fall colors outside are so great that I just had to take lots and lots of pictures yesterday. Lets see if I can upload them here...

An Estonian lady was at the local market the other day, and I was so unprepared for this that I could not help buying some more Estonian yarn, although I really do not need these, I still needed them...
